Good afternoon. The accidental discovery of a new gold-bearing seam near the main Seis Carros mine on 3 September triggered an immediate rush. Miners using picks and hoes dug numerous deep shafts through fragile ground, cutting across a village road and reportedly destroying three precarious homes. Within one week, four pits collapsed and killed 15 miners, including a 16-year-old and an elderly man; six died in the latest collapse early yesterday.
The speed of the excavation helps explain the immediate danger. But it does not explain how mining on this scale could resume at a site officially closed for approximately ten months. Seis Carros was already being worked clandestinely, particularly at night, before the latest discovery drew more miners back.

Survivors have alleged that police officers guard the site during the day but allow miners to enter after dark in exchange for payments. All four fatal collapses occurred at night. If those allegations are true, officers responsible for enforcing the closure have instead helped create the conditions in which miners are dying.
The claims require an urgent and independent investigation. The authorities should establish who was deployed at Seis Carros, who controlled access and whether money changed hands. Fifteen deaths cannot be treated merely as the consequence of miners ignoring an official prohibition when the prohibition itself may have become a source of illicit income.
Vanduzi administrator Armando Mude Canheze offers a different explanation. He blames gombiros—unaffiliated miners who enter pits without permission—and says police have avoided confrontation because the men are desperate and could respond violently. He now wants the new excavations filled using machinery protected by a stronger police contingent.
