Good afternoon. The Chimoio municipality has removed its newly unveiled statue of Josina Machel after widespread criticism and ridicule over its appearance. The sculptor says the work was altered without his approval and has promised to produce a replacement.
The decision should spare the municipality further embarrassment, but should also prompt a wider discussion in Mozambique.
This is the second time in little more than a year that a monument to one of Mozambique's founding figures has become the subject of public ridicule. The Eduardo Mondlane statue unveiled in Maputo in 2024 provoked similar criticism, with many questioning whether it bore any real resemblance to the man it sought to commemorate. In neither case did anyone dispute the importance of the historical figures themselves. People simply asked why the monuments failed to do them justice.

Public monuments are unlike most public works. Roads deteriorate, buildings are renovated and governments come and go. Statues are intended to outlive them all, and shape how future generations encounter the people who helped build the nation.
Mozambique has often chosen to commemorate those figures through a fairly uniform visual language. Samora Machel statues stand across the country. Heroes' Square has become the template for countless memorials. Familiar symbols are repeated from province to province. There is nothing inherently wrong with creating a recognisable national style, but repetition should not become a substitute for artistic ambition.
