Armed men target villagers and traders in Macomia Attacks

Four incidents in the Macomia district over the last two weeks have exposed state failure to provide security

A series of armed attacks in the Macomia district has intensified concerns among rural villagers and urban traders alike about the state's capacity to provide protection.

At least four violent incidents were recorded between 10 and 24 May. Suspected insurgents attacked two rural villages, while in Macomia town, two attacks, apparently motivated by money, have been attributed to insurgents, though in one case, some are blaming Mozambique’s defence and security forces.
