Frelimo’s disappointing election

The name of the ruling party’s presidential candidate is at stake in its leadership election, but the future of the country is not

Good afternoon. We report today on plans by ruling party Frelimo to finally choose their presidential candidate in May, having previously looked like it was going to decide in March and then April. That leader is all but guaranteed to be Mozambique’s next president after the elections in October.

President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade met today in the Presidency in Maputo, where they discussed the country’s social and political situation, in particular the conflict in Cabo Delgado. According to a statement published this evening, they also discussed the reintegration process of the former Renamo guerrillas, 34% of whom are now receiving their pensions.
