Good afternoon. The district of Mogovolas in the southern province of Nampula is grappling with escalating violence linked to the region’s booming but chaotic artisanal mining sector. On 19 May, around 300 artisanal miners attacked and vandalised around 12 commercial stores and three vehicles, mostly owned by foreign nationals, in the Iuluti administrative post. Yesterday, a violent confrontation erupted in Nametil, the district capital, when 14 armed men clashed with the police during an attempted robbery of a Bengali agricultural commodities trader.
