Government keeps a lid on asset declarations

Ministers and senior officials are being pressed to declare what assets they own, but the public will not be told

Good afternoon. How much transparency does President Daniel Chapo expect from his government? Two months ago, the Attorney-General’s Office announced it was extending the deadline for ministers and senior officials to submit declarations of assets they own, after some 18% of them, or about 17,000 people, failed to submit on time.

The perception that members of the government and senior officials (many of whom are members of the ruling Frelimo party, and got their jobs through patronage networks) have used their connections to acquire stakes in various businesses is one that inflames public opinion and feeds the perception that much of the state and the economy have been captured by a greedy elite.
