Islamic State-backed fighters have stepped up their operations in Cabo Delgado throughout July, mounting incursions on the two main roads linking the north and south of the province, the N380 national road and the regional R698 Montepuez-Nairoto-Mueda road, and threatening road traffic. The escalation follows successive and intense clashes around the Catupa base, in Macomia district, contested since June between pro-government forces and insurgents.
