The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for an attack in Macomia district on 8 January, in which one person was killed.
Local sources told Zitamar that the incident occurred around 6pm in the village of Quinto Congresso, when a group of insurgents, believed to be operating from a base near Namabo, attacked the victim while he was resting on his porch. They beheaded him before fleeing the scene within 15 minutes.
Islamic State said on social media that its Mozambique branch attacked with machine guns, resulting in one death.
Quinto Congresso lies around 14km south of a Rwandan Defence Forces outpost.
Insurgents have mounted small-scale attacks on civilians and security forces in Macomia and Muidumbe districts regularly in the last two months.
