Good afternoon. As well as potentially spreading fear among locals, the shooting involving Rwandan security forces and insurgents in the town of Mocímboa da Praia on Saturday (see our story below) will be concerning to many people, even though it is wrong to try to draw any conclusions from one isolated incident.

Our sources suggest that the shooting was the result of insurgents in a house feeling threatened by the presence of a Rwandan patrol, rather than a deliberate ambush by insurgents. In that case, then there is no reason to believe that insurgents have stopped avoiding attacking Rwandan forces, as had been the case up to now, and the shooting does not in itself suggest an escalation of the fighting.
