# Mozambique 27 Jan 2017: A new arms deal

Good afternoon. Next week Maputo will welcome the [Infra-Gas Projects conference](http://africaninfex.com/all-events/infragas?ref=zitamar.com), an event which could coincide with an important milestone in the Rovuma Basin LNG projects as the resettlement plan for Afungi is put to the minister of Public Administration..

Future gas revenues will be key to Mozambique’s solvency in the decades to come - but will come too late to help the country out of its current debt crisis, according to the panellists in *Zitamar*’s first ever live webinar, held in conjunction with [Africa Research Institute](http://www.africaresearchinstitute.org/?ref=zitamar.com) on Wednesday. The alternative solutions open to Mozambique were discussed in depth by our expert panel.

The Russian press have uncovered a deal signed between Maputo and Moscow in 2015, which came into effect last year, to sell Russian arms to Mozambique as part of a military co-operation agreement.

Meanwhile, data from neighbouring Zimbabwe has revealed that Mozambique has joined the list of buyers of tobacco from that country - albeit, for now, in very small quantities. Zimbabwe’s tobacco growers are hoping it could herald the start of a new relationship, however.

And finally, a Chinese investment firm says it is talking with local partners in Mozambique about setting up waste-to-energy projects in the country - to solve waste disposal and energy issues in one fell swoop.
