TotalEnergies’ country head Maxime Rabilloud visited the port of Mocímboa da Praia in Cabo Delgado on Sunday, 13 March, in the company of provincial governor Valige Tauabo.

A [statement](https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story%5Ffbid=309753924587034&id=100066572866051&%5F%5Fcft%5F%5F[0]=AZUhuUYxklcKNJzIzznO0W4hH4B71s969v3lmtkJF1VDnjbfdDBjhd%5FdWdFpzrmaMtH3SEnh2vauUFokXUeHAu5tdpfm3pnzm1NWHsu8YWhY9VeToNaJWv7hd20gY5%5Fi5L-abUDwblAjIcAHsOVhjkRW&%5F%5Ftn%5F%5F=%2CO%2CP-R) from Tauabo’s office said the visit to the town, which was [overrun by insurgents in June 2020](https://www.zitamar.com/mocimboa-da-praia-could-disappear-locals-warn-as-police-take-over/), said the visit aimed to evaluate current conditions at the port in order to decide on the restart of dredging activities to allow cargo vessels to supply goods through the port for districts in the north of Cabo Delgado province.

Mozambique’s armed forces [retook Mocímboa da Praia](https://www.zitamar.com/rwandan-troops-help-mozambique-retake-mocimboa-da-praia/) in August 2021 with the help of Rwandan troops, but the town remains largely empty of people, and the port has not yet been reactivated.

The Cabo Delgado provincial government said its Centre for Promotion of Development (Centro de Promoção de Desenvolvimento, CPDE) was working to reopen the port, which would — if successful — guarantee the supply of food products, construction material, and fuel to the north of Cabo Delgado.

TotalEnergies is the operator of the Mozambique LNG project being developed on the Afungi peninsula in Palma district, to the north of Mocímboa da Praia. The project is currently on hold pending the restoration of [“sustainable security” to the region, TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne said ](https://www.zitamar.com/totalenergies-head-says-sustainable-security-needed-to-restart-lng-project/)on a visit to Mozambique in January this year.
