Who killed Carlos Zandamela?

The death of a senior police officer is a reminder of the dark underworld of the Mozambican security forces

Good afternoon. The Mozambican police have belatedly confirmed that it was Carlos Zandamela, the head of reconnaissance for the UIR riot police, who was shot dead on Wednesday night last week (see below), three days after media reports of the shooting which named him as the victim.

It remains a matter of speculation why he was killed, but the manner of his death offers some clues. Zandamela’s car was blocked and then assassins opened fire at point-blank range with multiple weapons. It has the signs of a professional job of the kind associated with organised crime or with the so-called “death squads” that have killed political opponents of ruling party Frelimo.
