Good afternoon. Having written earlier this week about the dangers of politicians’ children trafficking in influence, it seems the first major corruption scandal of the Chapo presidency is precisely that — albeit not involving Chapo’s own offspring.

The Administrative Court this week ruled that the contract awarded by the national cotton and edible oils institute (Instituto do Algodão e Oleaginosas de Moçambique, IAOM) could not proceed, since the winning bid, from a new company called Future Technologies of Mozambique (FTM), did not meet certain legal criteria and was also not the most advantageous for Mozambique.
The court did not, however, mention the political controversy around the issue. The IAOM falls under the Ministry of Agriculture, and FTM is related to the agriculture minister, Roberto Albino, through a business partner of his, Paulo Auade Junior.
