US funding puts Mozambique in a privileged position compared to many other African countries

Good afternoon. Yesterday saw the United States government promise $360m a year for five years to fund healthcare in Mozambique (see below). It is a far cry from the dark headlines of January and February, when the suspension of US aid was followed by the closure of the United States Agency for International Development.

The funding announced yesterday will not restore every US-funded project that was lost earlier this year, but it is an important sign of US confidence in Mozambique. The so-called “America First global health strategy” of US president Donald Trump’s government aims to promote American interests by reducing the risk of disease spreading to US shores or affecting US interests abroad.
