Have kidnappers met their match in Chapo?

The police have stepped up their efforts against kidnappers, thanks to a push from their political masters

Good afternoon. As we report today, the scourge of kidnappings in Mozambique, which have terrorised business owners for over a decade, is under threat. Although the actual number of kidnappings recorded in the capital Maputo so far this year is not much less than the same period last year (contrary to an official statement: see below), police are continuing to prosecute kidnappings more energetically and efficiently. Whereas in the past there was often little or no police reaction to a kidnapping, now the police are responding quickly and chasing after kidnappers, which seems to have led to victims being released more promptly, with or without a ransom being paid. Thus out of nine people kidnapped in the eight cases of 2025, eight have been released.

Not all of the improved results can be attributed to police work: as we report, recent kidnappings have been less professional than in the past. However, as we report, the change in the police approach has been enough to get some business people living in self-imposed exile to consider moving back to Mozambique.
