Good afternoon. President Daniel Chapo is expected to tour Europe next week, meeting foreign dignitaries and showing his face in the continent’s capitals. Much of the purpose of these visits is for domestic consumption. Five months on from when Chapo was inaugurated — during a time of national disorder, surrounded by a tight security cordon and with most invited foreign heads of state staying away — his aides are still anxious about his status as a legitimate president. It is only a few months since protesters who insisted that opposition politician Venâncio Mondlane, and not Chapo, was their rightful president, were burning offices of ruling party Frelimo and smashing up toll gates to dispute the election results and vent their anger at Frelimo.
