The coastal district of Macomia has become the epicentre of Cabo Delgado’s insurgency this year, having suffered the vast majority of attacks and battles since 1 January, according to data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.

After extending their operational reach along the Palma-Balama-Montepuez corridor in late 2025 and into Erati and Memba districts in Nampula province, insurgents regrouped in their traditional heartlands of Macomia and neighbouring Mocímboa da Praia at the end of the year. Since January, they have concentrated on attacking supply routes and military positions rather than widening their territorial reach.
