Manuel Chang pushes for early release from US jail

Former finance minister is continuing to plead for compassionate release

Manuel Chang, Mozambique’s former finance minister, is continuing to plead for compassionate release from US prison two months ahead of his scheduled deportation after attorneys rejected his appeal.

Chang, 70, is set to be deported on 26 March 2026 but his lawyers filed a motion in December requesting compassionate release, arguing that his age, declining health, and the conditions of his detention constitute “extraordinary and compelling” grounds for his immediate return to Mozambique.
