Mozambique aims to revitalise coastal shipping with new cabotage services

Cabotage services are now linking the ports of Maputo, Nacala and Mocímboa da Praia, but previous attempts to provide maritime transport have failed due to high costs

President Daniel Chapo last week inaugurated what he called two new maritime cabotage services that will take cargo between Maputo and Nacala, in an effort to reduce reliance on road transport in Mozambique.

The first service, operated by Chinese-controlled cement producer Dugongo Cimentos, will not operate as a cabotage service initially, since it is primarily serving the company’s internal transport needs. The company, in which Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo party has a minority stake, now has two vessels, including the 9,000-tonne capacity ship Prince, which arrived in Mozambique last month.
