Good afternoon. More news came in late last week about the journalists recently detained in Cabo Delgado province’s Macomia district (see below). While a previous report of the incident published by broadcaster Zumbo FM last week may contain inaccuracies, it now seems clear that the basic account of journalists trying to report on a road repair project getting held up and challenged by security forces is essentially correct.

Despite being invited as the guests of the National Roads Administration and having got authorisation from the district administrator, the group were still interrogated, photographed,  had their equipment confiscated and were generally treated like suspected insurgents. Having a green light from civilian authorities does not seem to have counted for much, not the fact that some of the journalists in question were from the state-owned broadcaster TVM.
