The TotalEnergies-led Mozambique LNG consortium has finally lifted the ‘force majeure’ declaration on the liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in northern Mozambique, four and a half years after a terrorist attack forced an abrupt halt and evacuation.
The French energy giant informed the Mozambican government of its decision yesterday, after TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné reached a deal with Mozambican president Daniel Chapo on how much additional cost, caused by the lengthy stoppage, the project could claim against future taxes. The original reason for the force majeure declaration — insecurity caused by terrorist activity — had long ceased to be an obstacle to restarting, though the situation remains far from resolved.
