The Mozambican government was able to extract “last-minute gains” from Italian energy company Eni as the latter prepared to start construction work on a second floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform, to extract gas off the coast of Cabo Delgado province.

A consultant told Zitamar News that the “last-minute gains were only possible because of the excellent historical relations between Mozambique and Italy”. Eni chief executive Claudio Descalzi, flew in his executive jet to the Mozambican capital Maputo last month to clarify several points about the plan of development drawn up by Eni and approved by the government in April for the the $7.2bn floating LNG project, to be known as Coral North and operated by Eni.
