Mozambique security forces apologise for killing 13 fishermen in Cabo Delgado

Military admits role in deadly shooting at sea but faces public anger and mistrust amid rising civilian casualties

Mozambique’s defence and security forces have apologised for killing at least 13 fishermen at sea off Mocímboa da Praia, admitting responsibility for the massacre carried out by the navy.

At a community meeting on Wednesday, 25 March in Nabubussi, in the district capital of Mocímboa da Praia, military and police commanders acknowledged their role in the 15 March incident, when naval troops opened fire on six fishing boats near the village of Calugo, killing at least 13 fishermen.
