The government's desire to protect airline LAM from outside competition runs up against the country's legal framework

Good afternoon and apologies for the delay in sending yesterday’s Daily. João de Abreu, until this week head of the aviation regulator IACM, has been forced into retirement after he refused to deny a licence to South African-owned airline Fastjet to run commercial flights in the country, in competition with state-owned national airline LAM.

It’s a sad end to a long and distinguished career in Mozambican aviation. But although he's a victim of a political decision, he is also a victim of Mozambique's internal contradictions over whether or not it has a free market economy.
