Who will rescue Renamo?

Ossufo Momade has demonstrated again that he has nothing to offer

Good afternoon. After several months avoiding the public eye, Renamo leader Ossufo Momade suddenly appeared in front of the media yesterday (see below). It might have been better for him and his party, however, if he had remained in hiding. The leader of what was once the largest opposition party in parliament offered no solution to his party’s current crisis, and no sign that he is the right man to lead it.

Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) was relatively quiet in the past fortnight

Just over a week ago, riot police used tear gas and rubber bullets to eject former Renamo guerrillas from the party’s national headquarters, which they had occupied to demand Momade’s resignation. Those ex-guerrillas complain that they have not been receiving the pensions they were promised by the government in return for laying down their weapons.

Against this, Momade insisted that his party had done everything it could. His words were too little, too late. If the ex-guerrillas’ complaints are false, why were they not rebutted last year, when they started to be voiced? And if they are genuine, why has Momade not done anything about it? Why has he not publicised the issue recently? Simply passing the blame to the government and the nebulous “international community” will not do.
