Convictions for terrorism financing are a step forward in the war, but much remains to be done

Good afternoon. The government will be pleased at the news this week that two people have been convicted of terrorism financing, in a first for Mozambique (see below). Not only is breaking up the financing network of the insurgency important for winning the war in Cabo Delgado province, but it is also crucial in convincing international observers that Mozambique has tightened up its protections against terrorism financing and money laundering, so that it can be removed from the so-called “grey list” of countries with inadequate safeguards. This would significantly improve Mozambique’s appeal as a place to invest.
