Good afternoon. Middle-class opponents of the government will have enjoyed the news that former interior minister Pascoal Ronda was summoned to answer questions at the Attorney-General’s Office yesterday (see below). The fact that Ronda spent about six hours there suggests that this was more than just a formality. His interview came three days after that of Bernardino Rafael, the former police commander who served under Ronda.

Until January, Ronda was in charge of law enforcement agencies, which means that he was responsible for their behaviour for the majority of the period of nationwide anti-government protests triggered by last year’s contested elections. During this time, over 300 people were killed and over 3,000 injured in protests, according to the NGO Plataforma Decide. The majority of deaths were caused when police shot demonstrators, often without warning and indiscriminately, according to a report by NGO Amnesty International.
