The Trump administration has reversed most of its cuts to the HIV and AIDS programmes on which Mozambique depends — but for how long?

Good afternoon. Mozambique is battling to maintain progress made in recent years to get its HIV epidemic under control, in the face of the huge cuts made to US overseas aid programmes that have put Mozambique’s HIV and AIDS treatment programmes at risk — despite exceptions now being made by the administration of Donald Trump to safeguard some life-saving interventions.

A presentation by the Mozambican government’s HIV and AIDS office to parliament yesterday called for new sources of funding to be sought, for the country with the world’s third highest prevalence of HIV and AIDS, which is growing at the second-fastest rate.

The American PEPFAR programme, launched under the presidency of George W Bush to try and eradicate HIV and AIDS worldwide, currently funds 67% of Mozambique’s HIV and AIDS prevention. 26% comes from The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Only 3% of the budget is funded by the Mozambican government.
